Open a Local File
Open video and audio files from your Obsidian vault or from anywhere on your hard drive.
You have a media file on your computer and want to play it in Media Extended. There are two paths depending on whether the file is inside your vault or elsewhere on disk.
From your vault
Media files in your vault work like any other file. You can open them in either of these ways:
- Click the file in the File explorer sidebar.
- Open the command palette (
Ctrl+P/Cmd+P) and type the filename, then pressEnter.
Media Extended recognizes the file and opens it in a media player tab.
You can also find vault media files through the media quick switcher. Open the command palette and run Open media quick switcher, or click the play icon in the ribbon. Type to search, then press Enter to open.
From your hard drive (desktop only)
If the file lives outside your vault, you can open it directly without copying it in.
- Open the command palette (
Ctrl+P/Cmd+P) and run Open media quick switcher - In the switcher, select Pick from file system
- Browse to your file and select it
The file opens in a media player tab. It stays on disk where it is. Nothing is copied into your vault.
Opening files from outside the vault is only available on desktop. On mobile, add the file to your vault first.
From a link in your note
If your note contains a link to a vault media file, click it to open the player:
[[lecture.mp4]]Embedded media plays inline:
![[lecture.mp4]]You can add a timestamp to start at a specific moment:
[[lecture.mp4#t=1:35]]See Timestamps and Time Links for more on the #t= syntax.
